The experience we've had with McGeowns Estate agents is absolutely atrocious. This ranged from a number of problems we had throughout the tenancy, to getting our deposits back after we had moved out.
To begin, when we moved in, the house was filthy. We had to scrub it ourselves to get it clean, which I wouldn't have minded if they hadn't called us after we moved out to say the house was in no fit state to be rented out again and we'd need to go back and clean it.
Then through out the tenancy we had a number of problems with damp. One of the bedrooms was nearly covered with black mold. It took a number of weeks of calling Daniel McGeown & Co and taking pictures of what was there to come to the house (only 2 minutes away) to see the extent of the mold and do something about it. The rest of the problems through out the tenancy were also regarding mold in the same bedroom. They blamed us for this, saying that clothes were drying in the bedroom. This was not the case, the room was only used by the occupant to sleep in.
There was one additional problem where the pipe leading from the toilet to the sewer broke, just outside and above the back door. We called to try and get a handyman out to fix it and the response was "We'll see what we can do, can you go without using the toilet over the weekend?" After complaining some at them, we managed to get someone out within the hour to provide a temporary fix as he didn't have the correct material to fix properly.
The last problem we had was at the end of the tenancy. We cleaned the property, cleaned the carpets, the fridge, the cupboards... everything. Two days after we moved out I received a text message from my house mate saying McGeowns had said the house was in no fit state to be rented again and would need to be cleaned. We went back to clean the house, just to ensure our deposits were returned in full and on time. This again proved not to be the case. We found dirty foot prints in the shower, which we had already cleaned, mud and dirt tracked into the hallway which we had already cleaned.
We have been moved out of the property for 2 months now. The estate agents have 28 days to return a deposit with any subtractions included and they still have not returned this to us. We have now been calling on a nearly daily basis to try and get an update and they continue to say that "it's with the accountant, there's nothing we can do"
Overall, I am absolutely disgusted by the service received from this company. I would strongly suggest that anyone who is considering getting a property with themselves take another look around the market.
What agent could do to change your mind?
They could have been more helpful throughout our tenancy, instead of fobbing us off and making us wait. Mold on walls in a house with two out of three residents having asthma is not good, and the fact that they didn't seem to care was concerning.
