The Brighton student housing market is filled with dodgy landlords and agents looking to make a quick buck off students. Our house was a mess when we moved in, they claimed to have cleaned which was clearly untrue. After fighting for a month to get a cleaner in, they hired a cleaner for 1 hour simply to keep us quiet. The check-in report was WILDLY inaccurate suggesting the property was in a much better state than it actually was, and they refused to allow us to attend the check-out procedure as they insisted it could not take place until after we had all left and given our keys in.
Our house was infested with woodlice, lights didn't work, there was rubbish caught in the basement window which attracted rodents.
Despite all this, they want deposit money. We were given constantly conflicting information about whether or not the property was to be refurbished at the end of the tenancy and even told that there was people moving in straight after us, despite no viewing having ever occurred. (At least not with our permission!)
When fighting to get our deposit back, they INSIST on posting all the evidence to us and will not send us evidence by email. Despite this, the first package of evidence was 'lost' in the post and I'm yet to receive the second one forcing me to go to arbitration.
The student housing market in Brighton is crap and Tanat-Jones & Co are just another poor agent to add to the already huge pile. I'd say AVOID like the plague, but you'll be lucky to find a half decent one.
