From day 1 I've received really bad service from Thornley Groves. I moved here from Finland last September to work in UPM, a Finnish paper company that has an office in Altrincham and I needed a place to stay somewhere nearby. I contacted Thornley Groves to ask if anything with a reasonable price was available and I was brought to view an apartment on Barrington Road, with rent 575 pounds per month, all bills excluded. I was in a hurry so agreed to rent the flat, even though the people I was dealing with were always quite rude to me.
I moved in in mid-September, only to notice that the lights in the living room area were not even working and they were not was fixed until a couple of weeks later (I had been provided with a dim floor lamp though, to get me through :D). As I moved here for a work placement for a year, I needed a furnished flat, because there was no point in me buying everything from scratch for a temporary time in the UK. So I asked if the letting agency could provide me with a basic hoover for the year, and the response was first that they might have a couple and they will check. Then later I was told that no, it's not possible to which I said that there's no point in me spending all that money to something like that only for a year. The response to that was if I should ask my dad for some help (that is a horrible comment anyway but let me point out here still that I'm 29 years old).
Until end of July everything was problem free because I didn't have to be in touch with the agency at all, but then this morning water started dripping from the roof of the living room, only a little at first, but then it started gushing down from several cracks on the roof, wetting the whole living room and all the furnishing in it completely. The water was coming from the apartment above me, where a water boiler had broken and it was gushing water onto that apartments floor and going right through to my flat. This lasted about 30 minutes or so, and then tenant of the apartment above came from work and was able to shut down the water. I called Thornley Groves immediately when the water started pouring from the roof and the person I was speaking to contacted the landlord about it, and also the tenant in number 4. However, no one from Thornley Groves or the landlord came to the apartment, which at this point was completely flooded, before noon. By then the water had ran through my living room floor to my bedroom underneath it, causing damage there as well. I had to go to work and when I came back on my lunch breaks, someone had brought some dryers in the flat but no one had informed me about anything. I called the letting agency over and over again but they claimed they didn't know anything just yet. The flat was in a completely horrible state, the living room completely flooded and therefore absolutely inhabitable, however the landlord and Thorney Groves said they were not going to offer me any temporary accommodation (a bit of a bugger as I'm from a different country and hence I don't really know anyone here I could go stay with) and that in their opinion the flat is still habitable. The carpeting is still full of water and the flat is extremely humid. The service I got today was absolutely appalling, no one even called me about what was going on throughout the day, and no one cares if this is a health hazard for me. I don't know how long the repairing work will take but I have not been promised any sort of compensation for the very high rent for all of this inconvenience (I was obviously late from work as well and had to spend most of my day on the phone trying to reach anyone who could help me, so that is also one major inconvenience, especially in my manager's eyes).
In short, I strongly advise everyone to avoid dealing with Thornley Groves in any sort of situations, especially renting a flat via them.

Anniina Laamanen
