I went to a viewing and the agent displayed unprofessional and xenophobic behaviours towards me.
During the viewing, David made several xenophobic remarks and exhibited discriminatory behavior towards me. His actions were offensive and unacceptable. As a prospective tenant, I should not have been subjected to such treatment.
His comments not only made me feel uncomfortable, as my partner also felt the discrimination towards me. Although he seems polite, his xenophobic comments were subtle, yet pretty clear.
In our household, I am the one with the biggest salary and therefore, the responsible for most of the financials, yet, during our viewing, David made sure to tell us that I shouldn't put myself as the lead tenant when applying, as I am not British, and should put my partner, who is currently a student, as he is British.
He tried to give excuses as of why I shouldn't be lead tenant, trying to make it better for himself, however, they all made no sense to us, as I had everything he was suggesting I didn't due to my nationality.
I am a legal UK resident, yet to him, I wasn't. When speaking to my partner he would say that it would be better if a resident was lead tenant, so I told him that I am a resident, and that was when he said the thing that marked me the most and made me feel like I am worth nothing, he said "FOR NOW".
I was speechless with this comment, as I have never felt any form of discrimination until then, in 3 years that I have been living in the UK.
Knowing that Edinburgh is a multicultural city, with a big number of immigrants, his attitudes are concerning, as I cannot imagine how many times he has acted this way towards other immigrants, as well as how many could possibly have lost their opportunity with a flat due to his clear racism.
After the viewing, we applied for the flat, as we know how it is hard to get one in Edinburgh at the moment, and couldn't let his attitude ruin our moving, but I promised to keep to myself until I had a place to live, and luckily, it won't be in this flat, as I don't need to be supporting an agency that let their agents treat prospect tenants like that.
After contacting the company with this exact explanation and disappointment, I was replied with more excuses and cover ups, as if what David did to me could be excused by any of the irrelevant points brought up by them.
Discrimination shouldn't be tolerated in any way, and it shouldn't be excused. I believe, considering their reply, that nothing will be done in regards to this matter, as clearly, it is a very excusable one to them.
