My family and I had an especially tragic experience with Wright's of Welwyn which led to permanent mental and physical health problems, significant financial hardship, and ultimately caused our family to separate.
We were living on the Continent and returned to the UK due to ill health in our wider family, renting a cottage from Wright's in Central WGC. Due to the urgency of our repatriation to the UK, we didn't have time to personally view the said property, although a family member was able to do so on our behalf. During that particularly viewing, my Father questioned the strong smell of damp and mould, but was informed that these smells were merely fresh paint and plaster. We subsequently went ahead and agreed our tenancy, and were told that we were the “perfect tenants”.
Upon returning to the UK, we received the keys, and upon arriving at the property, we were immediately hit by an overwhelming stench of damp and mould. We rang Wright's immediately to complain, but we were yet again told that the smell was merely fresh paint and plastering. We then found out from our new neighbours that the house had experienced significant flooding due to a burst water tank the previous winter, with flooding saturating the entire house from the loft through the first and ground floor, with a water mark at least a foot high. Due to the house being unoccupied at the time, the house was left in that state for a matter of days before the alarm was raised, and even following this, proper work had not begun on remediating the issues for months. Upon raising this with Wright's, we were ultimately met with denial of this ever happening.
Determined to persevere and push on with our lives, having relocated internationally twice in only 14 months, we proceeded with our tenancy. Everything was relatively manageable until late-October when Black Mould permeated most of the inner walls, causing significant health problems to our entire family with both myself and my then Partner unable to commit to even half our contracted working hours. We were ultimately able to borrowing money from a family member to move to a separate property days before Christmas, although at that point the damage was done.
I now have permanent respiratory problems, despite being in my 30's and my then partner permanent mental health problems caused by both the mould exposure and the neglect caused by our experience. We were left in significant debts, with both of us unable to hold down a job during and immediately after our tenancy, and for me having to quit my new job in London and then take on a role working from home on half the salary. The net affect of all of the financial, medical and mental strain is that my family and I separated a year later, effectively ruining the lives of a family which was up until this point extremely happy.
