As an estate agent myself when I purchased my first property I really expected a completely different service to the one I was given from this agent. The initial viewing with the estate agent was good but from that point and when my offer was accepted I had NO contact at all from the estate agent except for a email that went into my junk from a 'sales progressor' which was telling me that the property I have had my offer accepted on is in fact a leasehold house not a freehold house... funny that they didn't know this information a day before when I made my offer? and didn't even want to call me to let me know and to break the disappointing news to me? I asked for advice from the agent regarding leasehold houses in the area, I was given no help and understanding and I had to do my own research. I would have expected the estate agent to have tried to re-assure me and help me make a decision about buying a leasehold house, not make me feel like I was bothering them and being fobbed off with a rubbish unprofessional response with no helpful information. I turned to my own company, solicitors and managers for the information I needed which should have been provided by the estate agent I was purchasing through. The 'sales progressor' wasn't a sales progressor and she didn't do her job of chasing or updating.... I was told she was too busy every time I called. I wasn't a nervous buyer or someone who didn't know the process but if I was, I would have felt completely let down and disappointed with the agent that they make no contact and didn't want to help me in any way to get the transaction moving... TIP get a good solicitor if you are going to buy through this agent.
Finally I got to the exchange and completion after over 5 months (this transaction should have been completed within 8 weeks in my experience) this was due to the vendors solicitor not having the right information and dragging things out due to the property being leasehold. They would not entertain helping me purchase the freehold and if I ever spoke to the agent they were completely disinterested in helping me as well. On the day of completion I was so excited to pick up the keys for my first purchase. I went into the estate agent excited and happy.. I left feeling deflated. I walked into the shop, wasn't greeted by any staff they just looked at me? I then went up to the girl sat on a desk whilst 2 men stood and had a conversation in the office and ignored me. I advised the woman it was my completion day and I was picking up the keys for my new home. She didn't congratulate me or say anything, she grabbed a single envelope with one key and gave it to me and made me sign a form, that was it! I was so shocked as when any of my purchasers come into the office to pick up their keys I greet them with a smile and excitement, a bottle of bubbly, a personalized card and a bag of goodies!! Also, where are the other keys? Do they have any? is that it? I just stood there thinking I can't believe that is it? I was so shocked to receive such a poor service all round by this estate agent. When I sell the house I would not use this agent due to the service I received purchasing. Estate agents need to step up their service levels as they won't be getting repeat business... it doesn't take a lot?? Just a few phone calls along the process, help and advice (which is what they get paid to give?) and a congratulations on your new home would have been nice!!
