I called Besley Hill looking to rent a property for when I begin working at Bristol University. My situation is that I'm a PhD student beginning studies this year. Postgraduate researchers, especially at PhD level, align more closely with the professional market as we work 9 to 5 or longer, are paid (mostly) and wont be having endless drunken parties associated with undergraduates. Most housing companies in Bristol and elsewhere understand there is a distinction and that I would not fit into a typical 'student' household as one understands that, even though I hold student status legally. Most landlord I have encountered don't have a problem with postgrads even when they've asked for professionals.
When I called however the individual on the line herd the word 'student' and proceeded to say there were no properties for me at the moment. When I attempted to explain what I have discussed above and explain that in fact professional households suit me better, she refused to listen and began to be patronising using the exact words 'I can't wave a magic wand and fix that for you'. She then repeatedly said if I wanted a student house I should have applied earlier, despite my best attempt to explain that the last thing I wanted was a 'student' house.
I understand that the legal status of students changes a household tax rates, however this is a minor (it takes less then a day) thing to fix and has not stopped other companies from letting me see houses. I would avoid this company as they have a narrow shop steward approach toward their customers, don't listen and are patronising to boot.
To top of that they seem to have no complaints department, hence why I have discussed them here rather then telling them directly.
What agent could do to change your mind?
Been less rude, listened to what I had to say, been more understanding that not everyone associated with the university is the same, had a number or email to which I can complain: it's more then possible this was one rude employee but they made no effort to help me find that out.
