On June 26, 2019 my sister received a phone call from Martin Debrah, Letting Manager saying, that 'the landlord changed her mind.' Shortly after, I called to speak to Martin as I was in shock. I said to, 'Martin what's going on.' He advised that the landlord changed her mind. At this point, I was panicking as we had no place to put our parents; given that we had already paid for the accommodation with Foxton. With frustration in my voice, I said to, 'Martin how can something like this happen.' I asked him, 'don't you have policies or penalties in place to protect individuals like us.' His words were, 'Foxton work for the landlord.' Apart from my frustration, anger and anxiety, I could not believe that an agency can do this to innocent people.
We had already paid Foxton over 4875 pounds and signed the required documents and received a notification, 'Congratulations on our offer' and to pick-up the keys on 27th June 2019. This was so alarming. I insisted that they put my parents in a hotel as we had already paid for the short-term rental accommodation. Foxton refused to help. However, Foxton did reimburse all the money which took 3 to 5 business days. We had to paid 700 pounds to put our parents in a hotel for 5 days before the wedding. Luckily, we found Airbnb for our parents within 4 days.
People always say don't think from your head but think from your heart. Unfortunately, our experience with Foxton was too late to come to this realization.
Our journey with Foxton started on the 2nd May 2019. We contacted Foxton for short term rental for our parents that was coming from oversees for two months to see their daughter get married. Our parents were coming on 27 June 2019.
We were excited that Foxton had a representative assisting with the viewings. Our main representative, James Collier continue to show us places. Short term rental was not easy to acquire. Foxton did explain that most short-term rentals are owners trying to sell their homes and if they do receive an offer this meant we lose another short rental.
Finally, after so many attempts, we found a short-term rental for our parents. On 24 June 2019, we received an offer. Foxton confirmed verbally that landlord agreed with amount proposed as stated by Foxton. We signed the contract and paid 4875 pounds for over 7 weeks short term rental. Unfortunately, this whole journey has been painful, stressful and disappointing; nevertheless, our decision to write this review is to help others to make informed decisions, to appeal to Foxton and the above representative of Foxton to change the policies regarding short term rental so that others are legally protected.
Please see a few tips and advice before considering any agency for short term rental.
• Be cautious when an agent is insisting on asking you to complete the application, requesting ID documents, proof of address before building a relationship with you.
• Although providing documents are standard procedure for Foxton please gauche how the agent is interacting with you.
• Avoid agents that are transactional and not relational.
• Avoid agents that does not listens to what you want and understand your needs.
• Most importantly, If the agency advised that you have received an offer, please confirmed with agency if the landlord has agreed to the offer by signing the agreement.
