Renting a flat from Unity Lets is the worst worst decision I ever made.
Some background info about myself. I am an international students, coming from far away to Plymouth to study a year degree. As I don't have the privilege to go to the house to have a viewing as I am from other country, I can only rely on the photographs that is provided on the website. Also, most of the houses have already been rented, there is one only house left to let from Unity Lets. My requirement are 2 room bedrooms and is near to the Uni. I rented that apartments with my boyfriend and another friend of mine. We wanted privacy so we rented one that has only 2 bedroom in the flat. Since that is the only house left that fitted our requirements, we have no choice but to faster agree to that as we want to quickly settle that flat else we will be homeless when we come to Plymouth.
Now here comes the first nightmare, they took AGES to reply the mail, and each time the mail is so UNCLEAR. And sometimes is not even the same person that correspond to us, making the whole email thing super confusing. We even have to resorted to calling international calls to them to make sure everything is in order (the documents and the rent money). Also, what enrages me even most is that without telling us, they wanted us to have a UK based guarantor or else we have to pay 6 months rent in full. YES, maybe that's how it works here, but without telling us in the first place, the person in charge told us this: 'the landlord should have told you'. Landlord? We have only been communicating with you only all this while. How do they expect 3 foreigner far away from UK to have guarantor based in UK at such a short notice? THANKFULLY, we managed to find someone kind enough to be our guarantor. That's not the end, they send documents to us to fill up. We send them back promptly, which is within a day. Now, here comes the next f*** up thing. As mentioned before, there is a few people communicating to us making the whole email confusing and messy. They actually ask for the documents not once, not twice but more than 3 times even after we send them 3-4 times already!!! How inefficient is that i really dont understand and get it. Everytime they asked, we sent them to them politely and making sure they have all of our documents needed. Finally everything was settled (documents) before we came to Plymouth.
Here comes the next nightmare, when we arrived to our flat, the flat is literally a s***hole. The previous tenant didnt clear the rubbish, few bags of rubbish were outside our door!!!! We have to cleared it!!! The house inside were filled with spider webs and the house lack of facilities. No table for dining and no chairs at all. One of the room is so small that there isnt any space to even put a study table inside. And they said the room is en-suite but there is only a shower place, no toilet bowl at all. The whole place is such a disappointment, we have to go out and buy our whole plates, utensils, cooking pots, and chairs. We spend 2 days cleaning up the whole place to make it live-able. However, even after much cleaning, my friend is fed up and upset about the flat. She wanted to move out, but she can only move out if she finds another tenant. My boyfriend and I like privacy, the only reason we stay with her is because she is our friend. We didnt want any stranger living in the same flat as us. To be honest, I am dying to move out of there as well. But we have to wait for someone else to rent the place from us, that will take ages and our school is starting soon. But we have no choice but to stay put and rented the other room as well.
Now, the problem is, the agreed tenancy is 11 and a half month, which will end in mid august. But we will end our school in may. This we have told the agency beforehand (BEFORE WE EVEN CAME), the in charge told us yes we can cut short the tenancy by 1-2 months. As mentioned earlier, some of the conversation with them took place on phone instead of email. This for instance was said by them thru the phone to us, we dont have a email proof of it.
Now, we have confirmed that we wanted to leave before the tenancy end, at the end of may, which is 2 and a half month before the contract end. We went to the agency and talk to them, GUESS WHAT. They said they don't recall any of such things. We have to stay till the contract end or find someone to stay there. This really pushes me to the edge. Why do we have to tolerate with their nonsense again and again? I just want to concentrate with my studies and quickly go home thats all. We are only cutting short the tenancy by 1-2 months which they said is ok in the first place. Now we dont have any email proof and they are denying the whole thing. Please someone tell me what to do. I am really at wits end. I don't want to pay 1k a month but not staying at the place for 2 and a half month. They are pretty insistent about it, I am thinking of contacting the landlord and explain the situation with him. Even though chances are low, I must try.
So please those who are thinking of renting a place with them, consider twice. This is really a nightmare to me, it makes me so down and depressed here in Plymouth.
