We used Gascoigne Halman for a recent rental property. If it hadn't been for an early close relationship with the landlady GH would have attempted and successfully got more money out of us than necessary. Summary below:
- we were not made aware of the extortionate costs to sign for the house and were given no explanation as to why we had to pay nearly £500 to sign the contract
- GH attempted to charge us for an inventory cost which the landlady luckily told us she'd already told GH to scrap this from the contract as she was doing it herself
- when reviewing the contract, I found GH had added an extra £100 to the deposit which was not only incorrect but also the landlady wasnt aware so GH would be pocketing themselves
- we were phoned numerous times for up selling of services, i.e. companies GH have a contract with to up sell tv and broadband, elec/gas etc. As an estate agency I expect a contract service not cold calling for other products.
- Landlady informed us GH had cancelled the elec/gas provider without her knowledge in order for a partner company to be the new provider. No consent was given for this and we were not informed either.
- finally we have to pay a ridiculous amount to renew our contract for another 12 months, literally to say yes to another 12 months cost another couple of hundred pounds. Overall such a shocking service, sad to say but the estate agency we dealt with did really live up to the 'cowboy' stereotype of estate agencies. We will not be using (neither will our landlady) again.
Comment on agent fees
very expensive - For a simple rental property transaction the costs were ridiculous
