My wife and I decided to move to Wilmslow in spring/summer 2013, having spent two years renting in Manchester city centre. Our experience of letting agents in Manchester - and, previously to that, London - was not particularly positive. But from the first time we were shown around 53 South Oak Lane by Elayne from Meller Braggins, we knew this company was something different.
The level of information we received from Elayne proved that she knew the property and the owners quite well, which is rare and a good start. No games were played and seemed honest throughout; she informed us that one other party was interested in the property but did not put us under any pressure or attempt to drive up the rental price. We visited for a second time and the deal to move in was done swiftly and with no hassle or haggling over prices. For work reasons, I had to insist on quite a complicated break clause (which was never activated) and Meller Braggins handled this in a very satisfactory manner. We immediately had a good feeling about the company and their staff.
That feeling was borne out over the next two years as Meller Braggins, Elayne, Michelle Fisher and others took extremely good care of us. Many agents act solely in the interests of the landlords, but Meller Braggins have proved the prefect go-between for both parties. We were particularly impressed by how simply they made it for all three parties to communicate and any problems that occurred at the property (faulty smoke alarm, broken bath seal etc) were dealt with by professional contractors as quickly as possible and without any argument.
Meller Braggins and the landlords made a huge impression on us when they agreed to clear and replace a weed-ridden fence at the back of our yard garden on our request and without any hesitation. They also agreed to our request to send a gardener round to maintain the front and back gardens on regular basis over the two summers we spent at the property.
Among other examples of their faultless assistance was the time we needed the garage checked for asbestos before our baby arrived and they did so immediately, and the time we needed some damp patches checked out and a contractor was sent over straight away. There was even an occasion when my wife had taken the garage key and I needed it opened to access my golf clubs; a member of Meller Braggins staff drove round to open the garage for me with a spare set of keys.
Many of these things are supposed to be incumbent of a letting agent, but in reality they rarely materialise and tenants are left to fend for themselves. Meller Braggins fulfil all of their responsibilities and more. They very much feel like a family-run business and this has helped make us feel at home in town we had never even visited before moving there. They may not be as big a name as some other agencies, but we feel they are more helpful and genuine, and fully deserving of a strong reputation.
Elayne, in particular, has become a friend to us and an excellent sounding board on all things property and Wilmslow having spent her entire life in the area. We would - and do - heartily recommend both Elayne and Meller Braggins to any potential customer and would have no hesitation in using them again. We are buying a house nearby and I'm sure our paths will cross again in the future.
