We are both doctors. In our work we have been spat at, verbally abused and insulted many times. Never have we been treated with such contempt or felt as humiliated as we were as tenants with Country Cousins. Time and again the way they treated us made us feel like second rate citizens. We assumed this was because we were tenants and not the landlords who they appeared to revere. The charges seemed very large from the beginning and only got worse. The worst happened when it was time to leave. They wanted us to pay a particular cleaner to clean the property prior to departure (who we suspected was their friend) but I decided to pay a professional cleaner who I have used before and is extremely good. The inspection was not done by country cousins but by the cleaners who they had recommended and pushed for us to use! They found part of a cobweb on a wall and a cleaning smear in the fridge. This was all they found in a 300 year old cottage. They charged us £200 to clean those 2 things and refused to let us correct them ourselves. Looking back I wish we had sued them for it but at the time they had made us feel so traumatised from renting from them that we just wanted to get away. Several years later this experience still affects us. It was a nightmare. For your own sake please avoid these people.

What agent could do to change your mind?
Communication is key to running any business as well as managing disruptive and antisocial tenants. This company needs to be more selective in choosing tenants and solve problems when they arise and not ignore people. Reputations especially in a small town can be quickly damaged and Country Cousins should realise this.

Kindly note that legally, letting agents need to publish information about their tenancy fees, government-approved redress schemes and client money protection schemes on their website and on third party websites (on which agents are listed). For properties to lease/rent in England, agents need to keep this information up to date and precise on allAgents or specify within the property description.
