I employed Hackney & Leigh Lettings to manage an inherited property in Windermere for a number of years, as living in London, it was almost impossible to manage it myself. Unfortunately I would have to say that the service which I received during this time was well below what I would consider to be of an acceptable standard. This culminated towards the end of our contract in my contacting the tenants directly, as I grew increasingly sceptical of the information and service which I was receiving. It subsequently transpired that Hackney & Leigh Lettings had been, for want of a better term, taking advantage of my absence and the nature of our long distance contract. The fees for the final month of this contract were waived, in some acknowledgement of the failings in their service, but this was only after I personally visited the Windermere office with a list of examples of my dissatisfaction and demanded compensation. The failings included, but are not limited to, misrepresenting me to the tenants and them to me; failing to manage repair works, such that jobs were in some cases incomplete and in others completed to an appalling standard - apparently in all cases void of the management supervision for which I believed I had been paying; in at least one instance, family members of Hackney & Leigh staff were employed to conduct some of the required works, without disclosure of this fact, when I believed that a proper and formal tender process had been used. In this case some windows/doors were fitted without FENSA certification, requiring me to later obtain indemnity insurance at my own cost when the property was subsequently sold. Once I had begun to complain about the above, the staff at Hackney & Leigh Lettings in Windermere became uncooperative and in some cases even obstructive, failing to respond to emails when challenged or even provide some documents necessary for the subsequent sale of the property. I write this review with no agenda other than to highlight an experience which I believe to have been utterly unsatisfactory. In these times of online reviews, only by sharing these experiences can we hope for an improvement from the companies concerned.

Kindly note that legally, letting agents need to publish information about their tenancy fees, government-approved redress schemes and client money protection schemes on their website and on third party websites (on which agents are listed). For properties to lease/rent in England, agents need to keep this information up to date and precise on allAgents or specify within the property description.
