I would not recommend Dowen to prospective sellers. They appeared good at the start - my house sold within days because it appealed immediately to my buyers, who had been looking for 15 months. Dowen's follow up customer care was very poor in terms of lack of communication, eg, texts requesting I call them but they'd made no attempt to call me. It took 3 requests over 4 months to have the Sold sign added outside. The move was postponed due to lockdown. Dowen's contacted my buyer during lockdown but not me as the client. I had no communication advising me about the closure of the office. The only contact I had was a brief, abrupt phone call just before the sale completed and an extremely patronising call on the day telling me how to hand over the keys whilst keeping a safe distance.

Expensive admin fees. Quite extortionate when you compare with other agencies in Durham.

To say I was shown around the property I was interested in would be hyperbole. Dawn Teggert literally stood in a corner and acted as if she couldn't wait to get us out of her sight. I understand that landlords have requirements and we may not always meet them (even if we are earning what I suppose is - from my liasons with other agents - the standard 2 1/2 times the monthly rent per month and even offered 6 months' rent in advance, plus a guarantor). She said that was not enough. Would you like us to be millionaires for a bog standard 395 pcm terrace? But if that is the case, refuse us outright and don't humiliate us. To be treated as if we are liars or unreliable is uncalled for. I have never met an estate agent like her and I have met a few. Prospective tenants are human. Just because we are looking for homes with less than perfect credentials it doesn't mean we don't still have our dignity. There are nicer ways to go about doing your background inquisition. If you don't have basic people skills, I'm surprised you managed 20 odd years in the industry. I hope, Dawn, that someday the shoe is on the other foot.

I've had an extremely disappointing experience with this real estate agency.
We arranged a viewing for a property in Newton Hall, Durham at 10.30am. We have originally informed the agent, Dawn Teggert, that we're coming all the way from Manchester, which is 2 1/2-hours driving distance away, to see the property. Meaning we needed to leave at around 8.00am to be there on time. However, at around 9am on the day of the viewing, I received a text message saying that they'll have to cancel the viewing. Keep in mind, we were already on the way at that time, having left at a little before 8am (and woken up at 5.30am for this purpose). You'll certainly agree that an agent informing a prospective tenant of any 'change of plans' about 1 1/2 hours before the time of the arranged viewing, despite them knowing they need 2 1/2 hours to reach the destination, isn't good practice. You'd expect the agent to make any required arrangements to accommodate you, especially in such circumstances. She offered us another viewing at 2.30pm on the same day and she made it appear as if she did us a favour. Really?
At around 2.15pm, I got a call from her asking where we were and whether we'd arrive as "she didn't have all the time to wait." It was just 2.15pm, 15 minutes earlier than the time of the arranged appointment (we were about 5 minutes away).
And we weren't even able to view the garage of the property as the previous tenants were still there (even though they were supposed to have moved out the other day).
Upon arriving, we weren't greeted in a friendly or particularly cordially manner. In fact, she didn't exactly greet us, and throughout the viewing she seemed to be rushing us every step of the way. Of course, we needed to ask several questions about the property, and her answers were always short, as if she didn't want to waste her words! Her attitude was extremely disgraceful, and it perpetually gave us to understand that we weren't wanted, that we weren't good enough for the property. She asked several questions regarding ourselves as prospective tenants, which I could have understood if it hadn't been for her repeatedly insinuating (quite directly) that we're dishonest and/or unreliable. And she did that without even making any checks or taking any action in this regard, which is absolutely shocking. This lady was rude, unhelpful, and not at all what you'd expect from a real agent with supposedly 20 years of industry experience!
We spent a total of 7 minutes viewing the property, and about 7 hours on the road (driving to the property and back to Manchester, after having to change direction twice because of the change in the time of the arranged viewing). Her tone seemed to say "You're not wanted here, I've got better fish to fry." Not to mention forking out (and wasting) £50 on gas.
I would strongly advise against renting any property from them. And if you get to deal with this particular agent, here's a piece of advice: don't waste your time OR money. You'll only end up at a loss and extremely frustrated. If there was no possibility to see the property at 2.30pm, we would have wasted hours, and she couldn't have cared any less. And don't expect a smile, either. All this lady can do is make a joke of your resources, call you a liar, and never once apologise for all the trouble she's putting you through because of her lack of breeding, professionalism, and respect.
We are planning to take action through The Property Ombudsman for bad practice as such attitude should not be tolerated. Nobody deserves to be treated in such a manner.

Awful experience at Durham Branch, rude staff member on telephone who blamed everyone for their mistake but themselves!!! Asked for all viewings to be accompanied (not that I need one, but a very good reason for that). First viewing, accompanied? Nope!! Rang the agent who had so many unbelievable excuses with everyone at fault but her. E.g.The viewer had asked several times NOT to be contacted by telephone at work, did they acknowledge no, "we tried ringing the viewer several times to check the viewing was going ahead" (telephone person to me). Viewer had confirmed several times before the day and on the day texted well prior to the viewing to confirm! Telephone person to me "she didn't get back to us" Uh, yes she did!! I viewed the text!! My response, I don't care who you contacted people, when you arrange to turn up at my home, when I have taken time out of MY busy schedule to accomodate you, and you can't be bothered to turn up! Overall, rude office staff, a catalogue of lies, not listening to the customer, or listening but not hearing. Viewer was less than impressed with the whole situation. Won't be entertaining them in my home again!!

Upon moving in, numerous repairs were promised including broken guttering, a damaged back fence, the gate on the side of the property having fallen off and lots of exterior wood work needing painting to prevent rot. The painting happened after living in the property for two years, with no warning. One morning, men arrived and started painting the house. All the other repairs are still to be done.
Other work became obvious while living in the property. Numerous plumbers had to visit across 18 months in an attempt to mend the leak in the bathroom causing water to run through the kitchen light fitting. The bathroom used 24v bulbs which the transformers for broke twice while living there, the second time, they were not repaired.
We reported a fault with the house and smoke alarm system 6 months before leaving which was also never resolved. This left us with no coverage on either system for the downstairs of the house.
Finally, after telling then I was looking at buying a house at Christmas and not to renew my contract, but let it revert to aa monthly rolling contract, and that I'd had an offer accepted in April (and moving out in August), they are now chasing money for rent in September and October.

Dowen had my property on their books for more than a year and only one (not serious) viewing was arranged. I had to show the viewer around myself. Their idea of sales seems to be put up a sign, put it in the paper once or twice, and put it on a website, nothing any other agency couldn't do. Despite a written promise to contact me once a month, this turned into three times in the whole period. They asked me for suggestions on how to sell the house (!) but pooh-poohed anything I did suggest and pressed for price reduction. As I already had set a price well below what I had paid for it, I was not keen to reduce more. Anyone can sell a house for a silly price. In my opinion, no attempt was made to interest prospective buyers or try to get anyone through the door to view what is essentially a very good property with some unusual features. I have dropped them and I would not recommend them, not this branch at least.
