I bought a property that was advertised by Whitegates. To be honest we overlooked the property for months because the photos were pretty bad but we got around to it eventually. I booked an initial viewing and they informed me that the seller would be carrying out the viewing rather than one of their agents. I asked for the seller's mobile number in case we got lost or were running late. “No,†I was told, “we don't do that.†Once we had seen the property I called them to put in the offer and they got straight in touch with the seller and then got straight back to me - happy days. After a bit of back and forth we settled on a price and terms. Whitegates were to take it off the website straight away, put up a sold sign and stop marketing it. The rest was up to me and the seller. Three days later I got a call saying that “There is a lot of interest in the property†and “ would I like to book another viewing?†I asked why the property was still being marketed. A lot of mumbling later and after two trips to ask someone else I was told “We'll keep it on for a bit then mark it under offer, then sold.†I asked whether this was on the sellers instructions and reminded him that it had been agreed that the property would be taken off the website and that no further viewings would be carried out. The guy blustered a bit and then hung up. Two months later the property is still being advertised online. Apparently “viewing is highly recommended.†It turned out that they were so hands off that I didn't have to deal with them for the rest of the process. The day before we completed I called them to ask who I would be picking the keys up from. “Why do you want to know?†they demanded. "I'm not sure we can tell you that." I told them I'd bought the property and needed to know who had the keys. “Who are you?†came the reply. Personally I'm ok with this sort of incompetence from 16 year old salesmen belt-feeding out cut price dishwashers to the masses but less keen on it when I'm dealing with very highly paid property specialists who work in an arena where transactions are either tens, or more often hundreds, of thousands of pounds. Make your own mind up but I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. I didn't enjoy dealing with them as the buyer but I feel really bad for the seller who essentially got nothing more than a bad photographer and an expensive and inaccurate messaging service.

18 Apr 2014Hi T, Thanks for replying to my review although to be honest I did not do it in order to thrash this matter out with you - I have already spoken to your sales staff (remember they guy hanging up on me in the review) about my concerns and it was pretty clear that the bloke neither understood nor cared what was going on and happily declared outright that he would continue to act against the terms of my agreement with your client. Hardly an inducement for me to call you again. In any case this review isn't a complaint that I expect you to action, it's a warning to the rest of the world about your business practices. By all means use it to improve yourselves if you wish but please don't mistake this as a cry for your attention. I'm doing just fine by myself thanks. All the best
