Would not recommend merchant lettings to anyone. Me and my partner paid a month and a halfs rent upfront , which is the usual , also £192 admin fees ( which is illegal , this was confirmed by the council and shelter ) £24 for a guarantor before signing the lease we quizzed them on all the charges we had to pay to get the flat , the company advised us that it Was not illegal. We've had a few problems in the flat and it's taken a few weeks to fix the problems in the flat which did get sorted after a few weeks if pestering them. We have now found a nice house for our family through another letting company with no charges apart from a deposit , we needed references etc so we asked merchant letting a To do this for us but we where charged £30 for this , the day after our notice was put in the flat was back on the market for a higher price , a viewing had been arranged and I requested that we could have notice so that me or my partner may be present ( as we don't like people being In the flat with our stuff here when we're out) no one turned up so I called the company viewing had been cancelled but they didn't think to notify us,!

I have had two flats with Merchant Lettings. The first one they charge astronomically high admin fees yet very rarely fix everything, but overall they mostly kept out of the way (to the point where they even told me it was my responsibility to get my deposit off the new tenant!). The second flat we received the flat dirty but in the lease we were told we had to pay for it to be professionally cleaned to get our deposit back. My mother, who was my guarantor for the first flat as I was a student at the time, has suddenly started getting letters from the Letting Agency for a flat I lived in 3 years ago asking her to pay 1000 pounds of rent that I definitely do not owe them (and if I did why did they let me rent out the second property!). We have phoned the number on the letter (which is a Countrywide number) and got through to a call center overseas. They claim to know nothing about it, and have directed us to my Merchant Lettings branch, who claim that no letter has ever been sent. This is absolutely ridiculous as they have never contacted me directly about this debt (especially as it appears to be three years old), and looks suspiciously like a scam as neither countrywide or merchant lettings are claiming responsibility for it but the letters keep coming. Not only a total rip off and incompetent, but dodgy. Avoid.

I almost lost my investment capital and profits trading online, they wouldn’t process my withdrawal request . All efforts to reach out to their customer support desk had declined, I found it very hard to move on. God so kind I followed a broadcast that teaches on how scammed victims can recover their fund through the help of Mrs. Roberts Lee a recovery specialist, I contacted Her email provided for consultation, I got feedback after some hours and I was asked to provide all legal details concerning my investment, I did exactly what they instructed me to do without delay, to my greatest surprise I was able to recover my money back including my profit which my capital generated. I said I will not hold this to myself but share it to the public so that all scammed victims can get their funds back. All staff were really helpful from day one. Very informative and kept mum and dad posted about all aspects of the sale of their property. Highly recommend Slater Hogg for the professional and friendly serviced we received and a big thank you to Janice.... Read Full Review

Mark Cathro verbally agreed to sell our fathers house with fees of 0.9% however when our bill was issued we were charged 1%. When we queried our bill he denied saying this, there were 4 family members in the house when this figure was agreed. Very disappointing and unfair to a grieving... Read Full Review

Terrible organisational, customer service and communication skills. Very inefficient, unprofessional and lax. Arranged a viewing for a flat which I had to take time off for. They didn't show up and when I called they said the viewing was a different day than they had previously arranged with me. I ... Read Full Review

We've experienced them both when buying and also when deciding who to go with to sell. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. So unprofessional. Left them countless messages to view properties and they never came back. To top it all Mark came round to value our hse when we started looking to... Read Full Review

We will never be returning to Merchant Lettings after our awful year with them in an awful flat. When we moved in the place was disgusting, all 5 of the tenants had to sleep on the floor in the same room for the first week because it wasnt ready, we had to clean everything because it was disgusting ... I would definitively not use this agent again for selling my property for the following reasons: - In Aug 2008 I put my flat on the market instead of renting it as advised by a Slater Hogg & Howison agent. Indeed they told me it could reach a certain price (which was my determinant factor to ... Read Full Review

We entered into a contract with slater hogg (largs) in September 2009 for them to sell our home. It took five months for them to send our first viewer.
