Joint Living was created as a way for Rivers Birtwell, a family run, Brighton based to ensure that their customers were receiving the best service possible. We identified a void that should be filled within the student accommodation industry, which was forethought, care, understanding and wellbeing, ultimately pu
tting our student tenants first. Our unique approach means we are able to offer a personal and supportive service to our tenants from the get-go and every decision made is with our tenants in mind. Starting with the location of our properties, ensuring all have large outside space available and bike storage to promote cycling for health, the inside of our houses have large and welcoming communal areas to allow our tenants the opportunity to host friends and family in a home they feel proud of. We use local artists in each city to create unique artwork throughout our houses, giving each house has its own unique identity. Calming tones carry throughout our houses to help create a calming environment. The design of each house is based on a tried and tested concept, that allows space and functionality in each double bedroom and lets the natural light shine through. All rooms are fully furnished, and a theme is carried throughout each property, whether this is our calming earthy tones, colour pop or monochrome, each theme having been created by an interior architect that we work alongside with. When our tenants join us we host a social event to allow everyone the opportunity to meet to get to know their new housemates, meet us, have fun and enjoy themselves before they knuckle down for their studies. Throughout the year we run competitions to engage the tenants, examples include best room decoration, sunflower growing competitions, etc We also offer a free pizza Friday every month for one of our houses, so everyone in the house can come together and have a night on us, we rotate this through the year to make sure every house wins at least once. We take the time to get to know our tenants and help them settle in and engage with them throughout their time with us. Our staff have attended mental health first aid courses to be better placed to support our tenants. Our tenant’s wellbeing is really important to us – we know life can get a little challenging sometimes and it’s hard to wind down, so we decided to partner with sound asleep club, an app full of on - demand meditation & bedtime rituals, as well as yoga and sound bath classes to help our tenants let go of the day relax and rest. We have sourced exclusive discounts for our tenants that promote and encourage wellbeing, from city ghost walks to social events to meet new people, as well as this we have exclusive discounts with restaurants and venues throughout the city. We are also very proud to support local, independent businesses with this endeavour. We work closely with many universities and now feel that we have proved ourselves as a cut above the rest so that we are actively promoted and recommend to their students, as a landlord/agency that will take care of them, respond quickly to any maintenance related issues and support mental health issues. We have safeguarding procedures in place as well as handy tenant app, that allows them instant access to report to us any issues or questions they have. We have a dedicated tenant tab on our website, that shares healthy meal plans, budgeting, meal prep, as well as wellness inspiration. We use our online presence and marketing powers to promote wellness and support, ensuring that that we are always on brand with our values. Our staff attend frequent training courses within the business to sharpen up on our customer service and safeguarding practises, as well as a monthly brainstorm to discuss opportunities on anything more we can offer our tenants. We are always referring back to our brands values and ethos to make sure we are always delivering the best possible service and care to our students. We are also very proud to be part of The Living Wage scheme to make sure all of our staff are paid in line with this as well as regular team social events and benefits. Our values are Conscientious - We are caring and dependable, taking great pleasure in helping others. Our self-imposed high standards bring rewards and positive long-term effects.

Since moving in with joint living we have experienced nothing but issues since day one. The rent advertised was - only after we had paid the holding deposit did we find out it was £227.50 a week, rather than £210 like it was advertised. We did not receive the fortnightly cleaning service we paid until October when tenancy started in august. They claimed it was because the property was cleaned before we moved in so we got our moneys worth that way (its bare minimum a house to be clean when you move in). Issues take a long time to be resolved and aren’t handled properly - we complained about the black mould which one of the tenants is severely allergic to and a faulty shower, they eventually sent 2 workmen who simply painted over the black mould with normal paint, and told us we just need to clean the shower it to work. Eventually we got them to replace the faulty shower after we got a second opinion who told us it was in fact broken. We were left without heating the first 3 months of living here as it was not working properly, it is also externally controlled by the landlord which we were not informed of. The tumble dryer has been reported by the company to have a dangerous fault, but we were not informed and continued to use it normally 3 weeks. They have provided no timeline the repair or alternative clothes drying facilities and the washing line outside broke in September and they still haven’t replaced it. There was a fault with the front door not closing properly or locking, which they then a few weeks later claimed was due to debris so it happens again we will be charged, however this is not the first fault we’ve had like this as one of the kitchen windows broke and wouldn’t shut or lock a few months ago. The toaster doesn’t work, they have left 2 broken microwaves in the property, the electricity in the kitchen regularly trips meaning we aren’t home then refrigerated and frozen food has to be thrown away. In conclusion we’ve been completely ripped off, we’re paying extortionate rent prices (more than any other student we know in bath) a quite frankly hazardous home from a company that is rude and dismissive. Whenever bringing up any issues we are spoken to like we are simply just dumb students
