If i can save one person from the stress and sheer disappointment of what was supposed to be my dream come true move then my job here is done. I put in my application and viewed my property in February, was advised the heaters weren't working even then but they'd be sorted. Application successful and agreed on the 22nd Feb -maintenance work was to be carried out prior to me moving in and the landlord had been sent the quote by the 27th - have all this on email. Fast forward to the 28th March - 4 days before I was due to move in and around 5 weeks from viewing, received a phone call from Lauren to say the heating still hadn't been fixed. The landlord had agreed to do the other work but the heating could be looked at once the tenancy starts. Absolutely not!! Someone at the office hadn't done their job properly in making sure the maintenance work had been done. I'd just paid over £1800 in deposits and fees, booked my van, arranged for people to take time off to help me move, the usual shebang just to be told that I could have a full refund if I wanted to. Baring in mind I'd already had the credit checks, sorted my guarantor (who also had the checks) given notice on my house which is also being sold so there was no option to stay longer.....they'd had 5 weeks at least to sort the heating as it wasn't working for the previous tenants either. Anyway, I obviously had a huge issue with moving to an apartment with my child which had no heating (legal requirement!) and was basically told I should appreciate that Lauren had been trying to sort this all morning (by now 2 days before moving) even though they'd had weeks. I was then advised that actually, the landlord would do the heating but the other jobs would have to wait. So at this point, we have an asthmatic moving into an apartment that has a knowingly mouldy bathroom ceiling...again that they've had weeks to sort and again not acceptable. Was then told the heaters do work - a little but not to capacity. OK so you want me to now use a heating system that isn't fit for purpose coming out of winter that doesn't work to full capacity whilst in the middle of an energy crisis being charged as if it was working?! Absolute joke. Mould and heating would be sorted by the time I moved. Great. That's something at least. Pick the keys up from the office, advised the flats been professionally cleaned along with carpets (by Penny) and its also on the now signed schedule of condition. Next day after moving, in the cold hard light of day it's apparent that the flat hasn't been cleaned at all, especially not by a professional company, carpets just about vacuumed, the white bathroom is yellow and pink, Woodwork - filthy, walls - filthy, around the cooker - filthy....you get the picture (for which i have lots) I emailed along with pictures and said that it hadn't been professionally cleaned at all only to receive a wonderfully patronising email back telling me it had been cleaned, it may just be the age of the carpet, the marks on the walls need repainting, and the patio doors need repainting too (covered in just old dirt and black mould) I also have previously cleaned and done end of tenancy cleans - I know what a professional clean looks like, I know the work entailed and this doesn't even tick the basics on a deep clean So now not only have I moved into a flat with less than half the promised maintenance work carried out, I've also had to thoroughly scrub and bleach every surface so that it doesn't resemble a grubby crack den which is apparently my fault for not requesting it to be CLEANED!!!! I've been lied to, gas lit and experienced an absolute sh*t show of organisational skills - admittedly I did lose the plot at one point and put exactly that in my email which wasn't my finest moment but by this point had reached breakdown level. The last 3 weeks have been awful. This was supposed to be my dream and instead of moving in and being able to enjoy my new home and town, I've spent the last week between unpacking, having to deep clean the grot hole. Luckily marks, scuffs, food scum DO come off walls and paintwork with a cloth and bleach - admittedly not all, but they do so do hand marks. I asked for the company who cleaned it to come back because I wasn't happy with the standard to be told the tenant arranged it so that wouldnt be happening. When signing the property off, the clean just wasn't up to standard at all, it was filthy so either the company should've come back or the charge for another clean should've been taken out of the deposit. Anyway, for anyone else moving/renting with them, moral of the story is, chase the maintainence up and make sure its done. Oh and if you want to move into somewhere even slightly clean, specify you'd like it clean because apparently that's your job too.
