I had previously been a tenant within a property managed by Cottons for over 5 years, I left the property after being issued with 2 months notice due the landlord requiring his property back. I have never defaulted on my rent payments, and as I was leaving before the end of month thought nothing of allowing the standing order for the full months rent to be paid. As I was of the understanding that they would reimburse the difference when I got back my deposit. However I have been in contact with the Landlord and Cottons in particular Jason Coombes on several occassions and neither are willing to accept responsibility.

12 Jun 2019Natalie, thank you for your review, we take all comments and reviews seriously, however, I feel I need to clarify some inaccuraces in your review, firstly, you have been advised from the outset that that the amount had been paid forward to the landlord, due to dates on which you were leaving, clearly being told that the overpayment is the responsibility of the landlord, you have also beeb advised by me directly that this is the landlords responsibility to pay this back, so I fail to see how you comment is accurate, further more during our conversation today you were clearly advised that this is your former landlords responsibilty to pay back, again clearly pointing out the liability to pay you back, Not Cottons, nor mine, I notice you have also named me directly, despite not asking permission to do so, despite the fact I have been the point of assistance for you during this process & despite not being the Landlord of the property again, I also must add, another inaccurately. Despite this I have once again communicated the urgency of recovering your money directly with a Landlord we no longer represent. May I suggest you comment with the facts the next time you decide to leave a review.

17 Mar 2024I totally agree with the tenant that Cottons are a disgrace and a law unto themselves. They are a money driven company who place profit over people and employ staff like Jason and Brendan who evade responsibility and ignore complaints. They choose whether to ring or respond when it suits. They fail to deal with criticism and are only good as money collectors whilst neglecting the properties they claim to represent. They work in their own self interest and need to be brought to accountability. Cottons need to be investigated and the ombudsman should inspect them as a matter of priority. Shocking company. Avoid.

I have recently moved out of a property which was managed by Cottons and I am so glad that I have left them. They treat their tenants with thinly veiled contempt and any attempt to get information, repairs or refunds from them is like getting blood from a stone. I have given them two stars ... They could have been generally more pleasant, helpful, had better manners (like not putting the phone down on tenants) and known how to run a lettings agency.

Kindly note that legally, letting agents need to publish information about their tenancy fees, government-approved redress schemes and client money protection schemes on their website and on third party websites (on which agents are listed). For properties to lease/rent in England, agents need to keep this information up to date and precise on allAgents or specify within the property description.
