The worst mistake I have made during my 4 years at University is renting a house through Direct Housing. The reviews that describe them as conwomen are all too accurate. Before our tenancy even began, we had problems. They were trying to get us to pay full rent while the house was under renovation, and we wouldn't even be able to move in at all for months. When one of the tenant's parents called Clare to discuss this, she flipped out and told us she was going to pull the house from us. Effectively leaving us with nowhere to live just days before term started. Clare did apologise for her ridiculous and unprofessional outburst and said we could in fact have the house so we signed the tenancy agreement. When we arrived to move in, the house was a building site. The renovation works had just started and we spent weeks with workmen in the house. We had no kitchen or living area and one tenant did not even have a bed for the first 2 months, yet they tried to make her pay full rent. Moreover, when we were burgled, it took them weeks to repair the window that was broken into. For weeks the house was not secure and Direct Housing could not have cared less. We tried to talk to the agents at various points during our tenancy to work out some of these numerous issues. On one occasion, Clare had another outburst and called the 6 of us 'the most dysfunctional group of people she had ever seen.' Do not use Direct Housing, you will regret it. And if you do, definitely do not deal with Clare!

5 Aug 2016I am very disappointed to read this review, especially as we went out of our way to help these tenants. This property was initially instructed on a Let Only basis - we were not the managing agents for this property. We were made aware that the tenants were experiencing communication problems with the landlord and we felt compelled to help. We acted as mediator between the tenants and landlord to try to help the tenancy run as smoothly as possible. Due to the frustration experienced by all we are no longer dealing with this property. It is grossly unfair that we were held accountable for the landlord's actions, or lack of. We cannot, as an agency, authorise repairs when the property is not in our full management. The students had a great house in a great location but it is unfortunate nowadays that landlords are quick enough to take the rent payments but avoid their responsibilities.
