Chris was extremely helpful from start to finish. He told us all the best mortgage deals for our situation, listened to what we were looking for and explained everything to us. He was always at the end of the phone for us to ask questions and did a lot of the leg-work for us. He made the whole process of getting a mortgage a lot less frustrating than it would have otherwise been.

What agent could do to change your mind?
PLEASE communicate better within your team. And be incredibly careful about who you send arrears letters to guarantors that your files are correct. If this carries on I will be contacting trading standards and the police.

I have had two flats with Merchant Lettings, a company now owned by Countrywide. My mother, who was my guarantor for the first flat as I was a student at the time, has suddenly started getting letters from the Countrywide for a flat I lived in 3 years ago asking her to pay 1000 pounds of rent that I definitely do not owe them (and if I did why did they let me rent out the second property!). We have phoned the number on the letter (which is a Countrywide number) and got through to a call center overseas. They claim to know nothing about it, and have directed us to Merchant Lettings, who claim that no letter has ever been sent. This is absolutely ridiculous as they have never contacted me directly about this supposed debt (especially as it appears to be three years old), and "" neither countrywide or merchant lettings are claiming responsibility for it but the letters keep coming. I am especially concerned that this misunderstanding will end up effecting my mother's credit rating. The amount of admin fees the company wanted to charge I would hope at the least I would be dealt with competently.

I was on holiday when the tenant left and the agent rang me up and said that they had to give the deposit back to the client within ten days. This is a lie. I was on holiday when the tenant left and the agent rang me up and said that they had to give the deposit back to the client within ten days. This is a lie.
The tenant moved out having ruined a very large carpet. The inventory company wrote that the tenant said it was due to a leaking velux. The velux had been left open that is the only reason it leaked. There was a stop on the window to prevent it being opened too wide but this had been yanked off.
Neither the inventory company or the agent took a forwarding address. Piles of mail is arriving including a bailiffs letter for parking fines.

Be helpful instead of obstructive!

This company are a disgrace. I have actively discouraged friends and colleagues from using them. If you are going to rent from them I suggest you photograph everything in the property, keep a record of every phone call (date, time, name of person that you are speaking to etc.) and attach read receipts to every E-Mail.
After 8 months of trying to get my deposit back they finally paid me but deducted over £100 for repairs that were reported to them 4 years ago when I moved in.
They do not return phone calls, E-Mails or letters. However they are quick to contact you (more than once daily and a different person every time) if they believe that you have not paid your rent.
When asking for the name and/or contact number for complaints department I was cut off. Thanks to a helpful lady in a different department (Milton Keynes instead of the usual Manchester office) I finally got the number for the complaints department.

Just been competent at doing their job ! I ended up making phone call after phone call and almost lost the property due to their incompetance

Everything that could go wrong did , no apologies were ever offered , I stood with the mortgage advisor in our building society by a fax machine as they blatantly lied telling me that they had sent fax after fax , they almost charged me £10k extra as they hadn't communicated with the builders etc etc etc the list was endless but perhaps the worst thing of all was my phone call just as we were about to move in after six months living with my mother in law ..

This is just typical of the disgraceful customer service from the most inept , invompetant company I have ever had the misfortune to deal with !! They aged me by about ten years at an already stressful time !

What agent could do to change your mind?
Not messed up EVERYTHING, get a call centre in the UK or at least assign one person to understand your case, communicate, respond to calls on time? stop trying to scam money? To be honest, I\'ll never use them again!

Claire our mortgage adviser was absolutely brilliant and did everything she could to ensure things went smoothly, she was helpful, courteous and proactive. The people in Gascoigne Pees in Basingstoke were really good too in taking and passing on messages if Claire was with clients.
The only disappointment was when Claire was away on annual leave and the people who were supposed to handle our case were not that efficient.
I couldn't however recommend our lender who canceled our first valuation in error and then offered us the wrong mortgage, all of which delayed things by about two weeks.

They work in conjunction with our primary estate agents Entwistle Green in Preston (I'm not too sure how it works) and constantly call my housemates and me asking for money we DO NOT owe, purely because they have not read our file ... They work in conjunction with our primary estate agents Entwistle Green in Preston (I'm not too sure how it works) and constantly call my housemates and me asking for money we DO NOT owe, purely because they have not read our file properly and don't have a clue what is going on (One of the girls is Canadian so was asked to pay up front for 12 months which she did, therefore does not have a direct debit set up and they still call us every month asking why the 4th person hasn't paid). It is a different person every time so I then have to explain our situation again. Always call me, even if it is an issue with one of the other tenants, despite having asked them to call her directly on numerous occasions. On multiple occasions have been told that they will look into something and call me back, haven't had a call back yet! Have now just had a call from our gas company saying they are sorry we're leaving - we're definitely not leaving any time soon as we have just signed our 12 month contract, but they say Countrywide gave them the information.
