I rented my previous property with Foxtons. Let me first say that all their agent are always very polite, mannered and nice (Michal included).
Unfortunately, when doing business, that is not enough. At the end of the day you need to get things done.
The Landlord of the property I was renting was introduced to me as PROFESSIONAL LANDLORD (Landlord who rents multiple properties through Foxtons). Thus, the property was managed by the landlord and not by Foxtons.
Here I list what some (but not all) the things that happened:
1) I lived in a property which had a leaking from the ceiling for 8 months. The property did not have a buzzer, mail box, and lights in the whole staircases throughout the renting period. Every time I was trying to contact the Landlord by phone or by email he would either not reply to me until I would contact somebody within Foxtons or just say he will get things fixed by end of next week (this for 8 months), which of course never happened.
I had to call the citizen advisors in order to get help. The wrote a detailed review of all the things not compliance with Law and personally contacted the Landlord, who then had to rush in trying to get some of the things done in order not to have legal repercussions;
2) Two months before leaving, I booked the checkout with my Landlord. The day of the checkout he simply did not come and did not even bother to call me. After chasing him, I managed to get his brother to come and check the property;
3) The Landlord run away with my deposit money. He never replied to my emails and/or calls once I left the property. My calls where going straight to answering machine but if I called the Landlord with another number ... his phone would ring. Luckily enough the deposit was protected and I got the full deposit back at the end of April. The Landlord never replied to the deposit company which is now dealing legally with him;
4) I went in the Foxtons branch in Canary Wharf and the branch manager (at that time Dominic Cocklin) seemed to be very touched by the story. Thus, he promised to reimburse me half of the agency fee before leaving Foxtons. I never saw that money as well of course.
After all this, do you think Foxtons stopped dealing with such a person? No, of course, their mere excuse is that the property is not managed by them ... and so they cannot do anything. Hence, you may be the next person who will be dealing with such a Landlord if you choose Foxtons as your letting agency company!!
Absolutely to avoid!

Sorry to hear you had bad experience with your rental property. However, I kind of understand Foxtons (BTW I do not work for them) in this situation. If the property was not managed by Foxtons they could not do anything regarding organising necessary repairs in your property as it was the landlord who was responsible for that. As far as the deposit is concerned the landlord should have protected your deposit and registered it in one of the recognised deposit protection schemes. If the landlord had not protected your deposit, and moreover run away with the money, you can claim it back up to 3 times the amount of deposit you paid. I understand your frustration but again Foxtons was not responsible for your deposit. It was the landlord's responsibility. Hope it helps. Good luck.
