The agents at Lewis Phipps seemed a little unprofessional and often arrived late for viewings, but we were in a hurry to rent a flat in a competitive market, so we overlooked their faults and went ahead to rent a property through them anyway.
It was a big mistake. Although the flat itself was fine, the process of moving out was very stressful because of the complete unprofessionalism of the agency. We wanted to be released early from our 6 month contract since we managed to buy our own house in the meantime. The lovely landlord agreed without a problem (rental prices were going through the roof and he was able to make more profit) and Lewis Phipps soon turned up for viewings with prospective tenants. After a couple of weeks they stopped coming and a month went by with no more viewings.
I was getting worried about paying both the rent and the mortgage, so popped over to their office to ask why the interest in the flat has tailed off so rapidly. The agent in the office started looking through documents and talking in hushed tones with his colleagues - turned out that they rented our flat a month ago but failed to tell us about it!!! The new tenants were moving in in three days' time! I was very unhappy that they failed to inform us about it but the agents refused to apologise. I was entirely gobsmacked at how rude they were, on top of not being able to do their job properly.
Legally, we were entitled to stay in the flat until our contract expired, but I managed to get a removal company at a moment's notice and was delighted to see the back of Lewis Phipps. They continued to be troublesome treating our cleaner appallingly and refusing him access to the flat despite promising they would let him in. Such a small company, so much incompetence; it beggars belief.
Please, avoid this agent at all cost. I always dissuade my friends from ever going near them.
What agent could do to change your mind?
An apology would be nice to start with, but ultimately aiming for at least a modicum of competence and kindness in dealing with clients might be a better long-term strategy.
