I lived in a property managed by Steyn lettings for 5 years (we loved the flat so much and put up with all the things listed below because of the location and space) and had so many bad experiences dealing with their office staff I would never suggest anyone rent from them. Everyone else who works for them, like their tradesmen are top class and really honest and direct, but every single instance I or my girlfriend at the time had to contact their office, we usually ended up feeling totally ignored, borderline mocked and patronised.
Here are some examples.
We found some damp mould on a wall in the flat and reported it, explaining that we'd been told by one of their tradesmen that it wasn't our fault but a design flaw of the alcove in the room (we had the tv in there). Because of the shape it would always trap moisture. The receptionist insisted we needed to open our windows more and that we had to clean it up ourselves. We explained the crappy electric heaters barely kept the flat warm and the windows, which were wooden and of poor quality let enough cold in already without being open. She would not listen to us and kept repeating in a patronising way that it was our fault. We eventually phoned the council and they made them fix it.
On another occasion our fridge broke and we requested a new one, saying that the one we had was already very small for 2 people and could they please get a bigger one. They sent a smaller fridge that had one very silly little level seperating everything. I called them up and explained they had done the opposite of what we asked for. The receptionist insisted the fridge was the same size as the old one but I explained it might look the same on the outside, but the actual storage space was smaller as evidenced by the measurements that were provided with the paperwork. She kept insisting the fridge was the same size and wouldn't listen to the facts.
The final straw was a classic. When we moved out we let them know we were going to do the cleaning ourselves. They sent out an inspection chap, and he checked the whole flat and commented that it was completely clean to a professional level. His report said the same thing, yet after we'd handed in the keys they said we needed to provide them with a professional cleaning certificate, even though we'd told them we were doing it ourselves and the inspection had confirmed we had done it right. We also had no way of doing this as we were out of the flat. As with every other example the receptionist would not listen to us, wouldn't acknowledge their mistake and just kept on repeating the same old sentences over and over.
They actually made my girlfriend burst out crying one time they were so rude and mean to her and she works in social care so she is used to challenging behaviour.
Avoid them at all costs.
What agent could do to change your mind?
Employ office staff who actually like people, pretty simple.
