At first this agent appears helpful and above board (they want to get your money after all) but as soon as you have signed a contract they are terrible. Just seconds after signing our contract we witnessed John Caines openly making insults about another customer who had just walked out of the door. He is rude and arrogant and I think it is a shame that Jonathan Rees has entrusted his lettings arm to such an obviously horrible person.
When we first moved into our property we were shocked by how dirty it was compared to the check in inventory! We went tinting the office to complain about it, and surprise surprise nothing happened! We also had to bin a load of food items left by a previous tenant and not dealt with by Jonathan Rees.
Over the course of our tenancy we had mixed experiences with breakages being fixed etc.-sometimes this was done quickly, sometimes slowly and sometimes completely ignored! One thing I did learn was to put everything down in writing to them (usually email) since they don't seem to keep a telephone record of anything! They also constantly tried to blame us for things going wrong, despite us having evidence to the contrary.
The most disappointment we felt when using this agent was on vacating our property. We have notice since we bought our own property. Everything seemed to be moving along nicely. My parents came down to visit and between us we scrubbed the property from top to bottom. It was certainly cleaner than when we moved in! I was absolutely flabbergasted, therefore, when I received a letter from them stating that there were several things missing, and the property was unclean. I got straight on the phone to their 'Debbie Darvill replacement' Diana Sands who told me she couldn't talk to me about it on the phone and I had to put everything in writing. Needless to say after several strongly worded emails we managed to get the majority of our deposit back (I accepted a small loss for some stains on the carpet/Lino) but they continued to play games throughout this time, insisting I send the signed deposit release back immediately (when they wanted to take more of our deposit) and getting a repair man to ring us about replacing the carpet when they were well aware that we didn't live in the property anymore! They also sent letters (including a 'receipt' for cleaning that was on their headed notepaper and could have been whipped up in 5 minutes by any member of their staff) to the old address, again knowing we didn't live there anymore! It is all a game to them and they genuinely believe if they mess you around enough you'll just give up and let them take some of your deposit without question-my advice is don't! Look up guidelines on Shelter and the Tenancy Deposit Disputes Process to make sure you know your rights!
I would never rent a property through them again, nor would I ever let me property through them. Completely unprofessional!
