I am not one to normally leave negative feedback, but I'm very disappointed by my recent experience with Bradleys, which I feel amounts to age-discrimination.
I am a 70-year old pensioner with two small dogs and I have been searching for a rental property for some time now, but have found it very difficult to find any properties that allow pets. I finally came across a lovely 2-bedroom cottage which stated in the description that one pet was allowed. I called and spoke with an agent in Bradleys Hayle office and explained that I have 2 dogs, but that they are only small and do not cause damage and asked to be considered as an applicant. To my delight they agreed that this was fine and arranged an appointment for me to view the cottage the next day. I was also told to complete an application form. I finally felt that I was moving forward and that a huge weight had been lifted after months of agonised searching.
Upon receiving my completed paperwork, Bradleys then contacted me to advise that I was no longer an eligible applicant as I claim benefits, and this goes against their company's rental policy. I am a pensioner who receives rent assistance from Cornwall County Council, which means guaranteed rent for the foreseeable future, surely making me a more reliable candidate than someone paying rent from independent income, which could be subject to change at any time i.e. should that person lose their job or become unable to work. I also have a family guarantor to reinforce my application. My daughter contacted Bradleys to explain all of this but came away from the conversation feeling it had fallen on deaf ears.
I feel very discriminated against and wonder how a pensioner is supposed find somewhere to live. I have found this whole experience very upsetting and stressful and would urge Bradleys to reconsider their policy.
