Sadly my Dad died in 2018 and my Mum was left on her own in a large run down country property which needed some serious TLC. My mum decided she wanted to down size and move nearer to family so the property was duly put on the market . We chose Elgar’s because they were local and also known to us. Originally we were happy. The sale price was agreed but we had to get them to re-take the photographs as the originals were not good. All was well until a work colleague of my husband’s showed an interest in the property. They came with my husband to view but we told them they must go through the estate agent from now on as that was what had been agreed and we are honest people. Most people would have said at this point that Mum had changed her mind and withdrawn the property for sale and gone down the private sale route. Oh how we wish we had!! After we had an offer from my husbands’s colleague this seemed to cause a major issue. My mum accepted the offer. Someone else had offered the same amount but mum accepted the offer of my husband’s colleague because his house was likely to sell very quickly (show home quality in a commuter belt!) for some reason this was a problem with the estate agent. They wouldn’t put my mum’s home under offer on the website and she had random people knocking on the door asking to see the house and making her offers??? Very worrying when you’re a lady on your own. They said my mum couldn’t offer on other property despite a mortgage being confirmed in place by her buyers. She lost 2 properties she liked due to this. Then on the day of completion the estate agent handling the sale thought it was ok to phone me and speak to me like a 2 year old because we had left the door open for my husband’s colleague! Ok we shouldn’t have done it but by this time the sale had completed and the call was totally unnecessary. Not to mention the attitude of the young lady concerned. So 4.5k poorer. Zero customer service. Bad attitude. Don’t employ Elgar’s.

We spotted a property with Elgars - sadly it was up for sealed bids (I personally hate this method as it is open to abuse) however Elgars were the ONLY agent I have found that was honest and genuine with this method of tendering. I ...
