I've been renting a property in Sheffield through JMC for the past year and will be avoiding any rental properties that are let through this agent in the future.
As many others have stated, Colin is the perfect salesman. Starts off friendly and approachable during viewings, gets your signature on the agreement and then instantly becomes abrupt and disinterested.
Despite stating we'd like a tenancy lasting at least one year for various reasons, the tenancy agreement we were presented with (via email!) after applying for the property only covered a period of 6 months, with a renewal fee after the 6 months. Wouldn't have been an issue if we hadn't specifically stated we would not sign an agreement covering less than 6 months, before paying to apply for the property.
Throughout our time in the property we have found JMC to be unprofessional and incompetent. When they do respond to your emails, they don't seem to have actually read what you've written and will only respond to the parts that suit them. For instance, in response to a lengthy email regarding the numerous maintenance issues in the property, my dismay at the landlord not fulfilling his contractual duty to undertake repairs and a question about how to serve our notice to end the tenancy, I received a five-word response. The unprofessional way the company communicates with its tenants leaves the impression that they are not at all interested in the health, safety and satisfaction of their paying customers. The overall impression is that tenants are a burden on both the letting agent and the landlord, as exemplified by the fact that JMC have allowed the landlord to breach his contractual responsibility to repair structural damage to the property because he doesn't like the quoted repair costs.
We are eagerly hunting for a new property to rent through more professional and reputable letting agents and cannot wait to cut ties with JMC. I look forward to seeing the current property sit on the rental market for months when the landlord's refusal to undertake necessary repairs and the overpriced rental price dissuade potential tenants.
