I had good experiences with Annie, Stacey, and Laura, and wish to clarify that the following review should not reflect upon their professional performance:
During the initial lease-signing process with Fineholm, I had several clarification questions. Instead of receiving clarification, I was told by the property's agent that "this is not how [the process] works," but he could try to talk to the lady in charge of these questions, and see if she would reply. He said that while I may not be "used to the system in Glasgow with renting," he needed to move fast and get the property back on the market if I wasn't interested. I was interested, and have since discovered that this is not necessarily the way the system works in Glasgow, as I have had much better experiences with other letting agencies.
I was told that the property had been professionally cleaned before I moved in. Maybe my definition of 'professional cleaning' is different from Fineholm's, but the property was dirty. My family and I spent days cleaning the rooms, windows, floors, appliances, dishes, shower, and bathroom walls before I was able to move in.
During the tenancy, I faced multiple problems with the boiler, the lights going out, etc., but the worst was my cats finding rat poison underneath the kitchen sink and behind the baseboards in the bathroom (the baseboards were not cemented or clipped securely in place). As a veterinary student, I know that rat poison is potentially lethal to cats, and can cause blood clotting disorders that cause them to bleed spontaneously from their nose, mouth, etc., and other long-lasting complications. After emergency tests, it was determined that the cats did not ingest the poison, and Fineholm assured me there was no more poison in the flat. Despite this assurance, this situation occurred again a few months later. When I asked why the pipes underneath the sink and behind the toilet were not properly inspected (and the poison found) before I moved in, a Fineholm agent told me that their "agents don't have the time to carry out tests like that, and [they] refer to previous tenants and landlords to instruct them about things like rat poison in their properties." While I understand that the poison was not left there on purpose, Fineholm's (perhaps misplaced) trust in their previous tenants/landlords could have resulted in the loss of two innocent animal lives.
I decided to leave my property, get out of my lease early, and find a new, safer property with a much better letting agent.
Comment on agent fees
Compared to the prices of other flats in better condition in the general area, this Agent's fees were too high.
