I was a tenant at a Unity Lets property last year, and have mixed ideas about them as a company. I'd advise reading all current reviews before signing any agreement with them, especially because they ask their tenants to give them a rating online only a few months into tenancy (when you're more likely to give a good review!)

Firstly, the property was overall nice, although you could tell that it wasn't very well maintained and all of the furniture was cheap in comparison to other student houses I have seen. Saying this, if we had a minor maintenance issue it was usually dealt with fairly quickly and professionally.

However, there were various issues that were not dealt with quickly and efficiently, despite numerous messages sent to the company - we had mice and holes left by the mice which were not closed up, rubbish left in the back yard from previous tenants which wasn't removed for weeks, and wifi which was down for over a week with little support from the agency. We also had lots of damp in the property, and a large leak of water down one side of the house which we reported at the beginning of the tenancy and wasn't dealt with until we left.

Furthermore, at the end of our tenancy we received information about our deposits and £30 was deducted from each of us for a 'whole property clean' - that adds up to £120 in total. We were all infuriated about this, as we left the property in a very clean condition and the company should have cleaned the property anyway without charge if the property was left in a tidy state (which is was). When I contacted Unity Lets to query this they said that the money had gone on a deep clean for the property as it wasn't left in a tidy state (although on the post-tenancy inspection Unity Lets said it was left tidy). Knowing one of the current tenants, I helped the first tenant move in and funnily enough the property looked no different in cleanliness from when we left it. Even if a clean had taken place, it was not a 'deep clean' as Unity Lets suggested.

Overall, living in the property was not too bad, other than living with the damp and mice! However, their audacity in deducting money from our deposits when the property had not been cleaned in the way that they suggested is outrageous, and does not suggest that this company has it's tenants best interests at heart. I'd suggest looking around at lots of other companies before choosing this one, as there are some fair and decent private landlords and companies in Plymouth who will provide you with much better service overall.
