We have just taken possession of a rental property and upon receiving the keys, we find the property to be uninhabitable. The floors are unswept/unhoovered, the walls are smeared in god knows what, the windows and walls are covered in black mold, the house reeks of cat pee, there is random detritus from the previous tenants scattered around... in short, it's obvious that the previous tenants did no cleaning and neither did Chancellor's.

We contacted them because the house is filthy and we can't move into it. Our lease has a clause stating that it has to be professionally cleaned upon leaving, and we expect the same coming into a property. However, Chancellors agent Lois Hill is trying to deflect blame to previous tenants, to the landlord, to us - anyone but herself or Chancellors.

In twenty years of renting houses, I have never taken possession of a house in such a filthy state. I don't want my small son in that environment, and apparently Chancellors consider it acceptable to make us reschedule our moving facilities and find alternate accommodation so that we can get the house cleaned before we move in. This is utterly unacceptable and I can't believe that they are so clearly violating their legal responsibilities.

All we want is for them to have the house professionally cleaned, as is expected of us at the end, and to reimburse us for the time that we are not able to live in the house (despite tenancy agreement). This is not a lot to ask, and they are still refusing to take any responsibility for the situation.

We are looking to buy a house later this year, and we will most certainly NOT be using Chancellors as an estate agent.
This person would not use Chancellors again.

Well what could I say appart from the worst company I have ever dealt with!
When we moved in the agent said that there was an issue with the electric and its been sorted out so we would have about 1 weeks worth for free.

After signing the contract and moving in we found that there wasnt any electric and the key was missing... after going back and forth to the lettings agent anf the new place we found out that the electric key was missing and we had no electric to our new place. so after me venting at them they said they would try to contact the landlord but in the meen time I had to rent a hotel room wtf? cost me £106 for two days over the weekend to go into the shop to get a new key on monday! I lost all my food and £50 worth of meat.... throughout the tennacy we had balifs comming to our place.. the flat was falling appart and they didnt get any itenary to sign in moving in or out as he said there is none..

moving to the end I was told that I didnt need to pay the last months rent several times by the agent... but then found out that I did! so i did pay... now im waiting on my deposit but the landlord is trying to claim £100 for cleaning! WTF I and my wife spent 4 days cleaning making sure its more than rentable, they said it needs cleaning!

I will not be using them again and recommend no one to use this company EVER!!! they give you wrong info at start wrong info when your in and wrong info at the end!

I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad to be out of that place and not dealing with them again!!!!
This person would not use Chancellors again.

We were provided with the incorrect information from start to finish. The agent was too involved with sales patter to actually confirm facts i.e. the property would not be available until the 7th then the 13 th April, even though we had provided a clear brief that we had to be move by the 31st March. That it was a furnished rather than unfurnished property. The outcome being that we now have to put everything in storage and our dog in a kennels as we are officially homeless until we can source another property in the Oxfordshire area as we are relocating from Devon due to work commitments.
This person would not use Chancellors again.

Superb service. I never thought I'd write such a review but feel I must give these agents the credit they deserve. Their strategy to help get the best possible price for our property more than exceeded our expectations in a very short time frame. All staff were polite and professional at all times.
This person would use Chancellors again.

We received terrible service resulting in our sale falling through. The agent was consistently interfering in discussions between our solicitors and even the survey. We were misled on many occasions and were told one thing when very clearly something else was going on. The whole time we were negotiating contracts they left the property online for sale and we were informed very suddenly 2 days before signing that the vendors had pulled out. No doubt the agent had persuaded them he had a buyer willing to pay a higher price for the property. Absolutely disgusting.
This person would not use Chancellors again.

The house I was buying had been advertised through Chancellors as well as another agent. I bought through the other agent.

Having moved in I went out to the shops one day and arrived home to find one of Chancellor's agents in my lounge showing prospective buyers round. I pointed out that i had already bought it and asked for the keys. I was informed I hadn't bought it through them and as far as they were concerned it was still for sale. I took the keys off him and threw him out then went and replaced all the locks.

The people who sold the property to me had repeatedly phoned and written to them asking them to remove it from their list. They had also requested the return of historic documents for the property which have never been found.

Two weeks later I walked past their window to find my house still being advertised for sale. Marched into their window, removed the photo, removed all the sale details from the rack and gave them merry hell. No apology, not even an acknowledgement that they were in the wrong, they just stood there and looked at me.

A couple of years later a neighbour emigrated and put their property with them to rent. I was constantly finding the front door left wide open and the back door left unlocked. Nobody was interested.

I wouldn't use these people if they were the last agent on earth!
This person would not use Chancellors again.

Checked out of a property on the 7th October. Heard nothing for 3 weeks so contacted them myself. Was advised that they had been instructed to withold all my deposit....when asked why they said they were waiting on that detail. Advised them not happy at which point was told not to ring would only deal on email. Sent them an email asking them to supply details of reasons for deposit holding - still no reply to this, was then told to compare check in / check out reports myself and advise to them what the differences were?
When pointed out that this is something for them to do was greeted with silence.
Then got an email out the blue saying that deposit was held for rent arrears, which was news to be, advised that rent was paid via standing order, and if they could supply actual details around the rent arrears i could provide documentation to dispute. The response was no, you need to send us your last 12 months bank statements?? As yet i am still waiting for my deposit and cannot raise a disupte as i have no detail as to why. A totally rude company with absolutely no service levels at all. Avoid at all costs.
This person would not use Chancellors again.

Appalling from start to finish, sadly there isn’t the option of ‘awarding’ no stars on here, rest assured I’d use this option given the opportunity!

We have recently completed on a house purchase through Chancellors in Thatcham, Berkshire and can honestly say that we’ve never encountered such incompetency throughout our house buying and selling years. In the early stages, contact levels were reasonable; however their delay in processing our offer and the advice to avid stamp duty by offering a ridiculous amount of money for ‘fixtures and fittings’ was awful.

We have since found out that no solicitor will agree to fixtures and fittings contributions of this level any more as it is of course, in effect tax evasion. Continual lies from their teenage sales ‘team’ and a tendency to ignore calls, emails and even letters left us feeling ignored, undervalued and very much ‘out of the loop’. Particularly avoid Chris in the Thatcham office as his lies and avoidance of any discussion regarding the sale left us far from impressed. When parting with so much money, and knowing their extortionate selling fees, we felt that more consideration to our situation and that of the seller might have been employed.

I urge anyone looking to either sell or buy through this tinpot organisation to steer well clear. There are much better estate agents locally, one of whom I had the pleasure of dealing with when selling our own property, thankfully there is hope for the rest of us knowing that not all estate agents are the same as Chancellors!!

We tried to put an offer in on a property near Banbury. The woman who answered the phone could not have been less interested. She wouldn've give out the manager's mobile number, wouldnt arranged evening viewings and made it very clear that we were inconveniencing her as' she was just about to close'.
When I finally managed to get a viewing appointment, they rang my partner (abroad in Dubai) to say they would be late for the appointment and also arranged for another couple to view at exactly the same time (presumable to create some kind of flurry of interest). The agent never did appear.
I would NEVER buy a house with Chancellor's - even if it looked like my dream home.
This person would not use Chancellors again.

My tenancy was a history of mismanagement and muddle. Chancellors repeatedly sent out incorrect documents, failed to renew the tenancy on time, mistakenly pursued me for debt THREE times (and had to provide written apologies and assurances that they would not do so again), lost the spare keys TWICE, and repeatedly failed to do repairs -- they left us with no heating or hot water for a week during the coldest winter for twenty years (although a contractor was available to do the repair immediately); when water leaked into the property, they refused to take action for six months; they let a contractor remove the extractor fan from the kitchen and refused to put it back for more than six months; they took several months to replace a burned-out extractor in the bathroom; they took six weeks to repair a broken window lock, although the property could not be secured during that time. We could only persuade them to replace a fifty-year old divan bed (which proved to be infested) with a decent replacement by agreeing to pay part of the cost ourselves. Although they claimed to manage the property, they referred every decision to the landlady. The landlady often delayed decisions or overruled the agent and sent in her own, distinctly unreliable, repairmen. They also ceased doing regular inspections. The company is not dishonest, but hopelessly dis-organised. They outsource everything and do not even know where the property is, and they appear to have no ability to sort problems out. The landlady has now visited the property, seen its condition, and taken it out of Chancellors' hands.
This person would not use Chancellors again.

When my partner and I arrived at the rental property to move in, we found there was no valid gas certificate (illegal), there was only 1 set of keys, there was mould, dirt, foul odours, broken tiles, furniture and belongings (it was an unfurnished tenancy), the furniture didn't comply with fire regs, etc etc.

This was all after we Chancellors had told us explicitly that the place was clean, empty and ready for us to move in. We had several weeks of sleeping on friends' floors before we found another place.

Chancellors continued to show no respect for the law and showed no consideration for our predicament, and have still not even returned our deposit and first month's rent, and will not discuss compensation for various other costs.

There were one or two excellent employees but they were too junior to help remedy the problems.
This person would not use Chancellors again.

Agents in Henley were helpful in our case (early termination of the tenancy), but they could still try to be a bit more professional. They lacked attention to detail. What we hated the most, were all these ridiculous charges for nothing (eg renewal of the contract etc). The best advice is to avoid agents completely :)
This person would not use Chancellors again.
