I was a student at the University of Southampton and lived in a tenant link property in my first year and they were fine, landlord was good and helpful and deposit was returned in full. For my final year however they charged as

Dear Anthony,
We are sorry you are feeling like this regarding your deposit return.
As you are aware, you and your fellow housemates left the five bedroom house in a terrible condition, and we had tenants moving into the house on the 1st July 2009. We had to employ a cleaner to remove all of your rubbish, food from fridges and freezers, bathrooms and kitchen were left filthy, and bedrooms all needed a good clean! We paid the cleaner the full amount we deducted from your deposit and did'nt make any money from this as you are suggesting. As you are aware, we did discuss the deductions with your nominated tenant on the 30th June 2009 before any works were completed.
