I rent a flat with Townends and it has been a dreadful experience. We put an offer that was accepted and started the paper work. They had a month to complete all the checks, but did nothing! We were supposed to move in on the 1st, but on the 28th I got a phone call that something wasn’t right, they needed more money from us and they couldn’t give us the keys. They were saying that somebody went for annual leave and there was no cover. Is that my problem? I was furious! I had already given notice to my previous landlord and had nowhere to go. I do understand that they need to do their checks, but why is it done at the last moment? I ended up in hotel and I had to store my things with the storage company. They let us in a few days later.
I thought that it was one of, because of careless employee, but at the end of the contract I got a letter with conditions of the renewal. In the letter the rent was still the same (no increase), so I was fine with it. After a week somebody called me to say that actually there was a little mistake in the letter as I should have my rent increased by £100 and if I don’t agree I will have to move out by the end of the month (in 3 weeks)!!!
This agency is a joke!

My exact experience! i signed the contract, gave notice on my flat and ended up homeless because they called 2 days before saying the current tenant had extended and the landlord accepted. They said there was nothing they could do, they refused to give me landlords details or compensate me because whilst i had paid deposit and signed the contract they were not legally bound as they had never returned the signed contract by the tenant!!!!! i had to pay for a hotel i couldnt afford and i was furious!!!
Work was never carried out on the flat 6 months after reporting it and then they tried to threaten me by saying my rent would be increased if i didnt pay id have to move out.
I told them to shove it. If they uphold their side of the contract id do the same, otherwise i wasnt moving or paying more. needless to say that was 3 months ago and i havent heard from them since.

I really would recommend contacting the Property Ombudsman (www.tpos.co.uk) about Townends. I did, and (eventually) was awarded significant compensation. It took months, and lots of form-filling, but it was worth it - less for the compensation than the fact that the Ombudsman is surely going to have to do something about these con-artists if they keep receiving complaints about them.
