I bought a property that was listed through William H Brown in Sowerby Bridge.
They were utterly unhelpful, rude and disinterested in the sale. I booked the initial viewing, phoned up in the morning to confirm before driving 150 miles to see the property. When I got there, there was no one to meet me. I called them again, they claimed that they had no one available and I hadn't confirmed the viewing! I demanded that they get someone out asap, so Julia came out, after I'd been stood outside the property waiting for over 40 minutes. Luckily some of the neighbours saw me waiting and came out to chat to me about the house and the area in general, so it wasn't a complete waste of time.
Once there, the agent didn't apologise for standing me up, or for turning up 40 minutes late after attempting to fob me off with excuses. She didn't show me around the house, she just stood outside looking grumpy while I looked around the house with my friend.
I asked a few questions, she shrugged most of them off. She then asked me to fill in some paperwork she hadn't bothered to bring with her, so I needed to follow her car back to the agent's office.
When it came to negotiating the price, they didn't return my phone calls when I put in an offer. Luckily the neighbour gave me the number of the seller, so after more than 10 phone calls to the agent, none of which were returned, I called the seller, she had the same problem, that the agent wasn't returning her calls or let her know that I'd tried to put in an offer.
They did call me repeatedly, unfortunately, not to negotiate the sale of the house, but to try to sell me mortgages and PPI. When I asked to speak to the agent, they'd just hang up or threaten me with what would happen (i.e. that the whole sale would fall through and I'd lose my mortgage fee / deposit etc) unless I used their mortgage service. They wouldn't actually put me through to the agent. When I did get through to the agent, they'd transfer me directly through to the mortgage / PPI sales people.
We negotiated a price between us and proceeded. She said she wished she'd never used them and they absolutely did not earn their fee for the sale.
I would recommend that you AVOID THIS COMPANY. They do nothing to sell your property, they do nothing to communicate with buyers - they're only interested in flogging their mortgage and PPI products.
Comment on agent fees
The agent did absolutely nothing to earn their fees. I think they should have been taken to court to reclaim the fees they did charge.
